Search begun for next Miami president

The search firm working with Miami's presidential search committee has placed an ad seeking nominations and applications in several major publications over the next month, including the Chronicle of Higher Education, Women in Higher Education, Diverse Issues in Higher Education and Hispanic Outlook.

In part, the ad says

“Miami seeks a president with a passionate commitment to excellence who can lead and inspire a faculty. The president must articulate the Miami mission internally to faculty, staff and students; and externally, to policymakers in the state of Ohio and to friends, alumni and potential donors.

"The institution anticipates the selection of a leader who values Miami’s distinctiveness, its wonderful history and traditions and its success in educating leaders across a wide spectrum of American life. The next president must challenge the University to achieve its highest aspirations, to recruit the next generation of faculty, to meet its public commitments to the state of Ohio, to enhance the culture of alumni giving, and to redouble its efforts to become a more diverse institution, working closely with the surrounding community and ardently communicating the university’s mission and goals.”

It’s anticipated a president will be chosen by summer. Garland plans to retire June 30, 2006.
