Members of the Oxford community and Miami University have organized a memorial event to remember the message of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. A rally and march begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at the Freedom Summer Memorial on Miamis Western campus. Participants will walk from there to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park in uptown Oxford and then to Bethel A.M.E. Church at 14 S. Beech St. for a community observance at 11:30 a.m. The theme for the observance is Are You Being Served? Speakers will include students from Talawanda Middle and High schools, local clergy, Miami faculty and student organization representatives and university representatives. Interim Provost John Skillings will represent Miami President Jim Garland, who will be out of town. In the march, we will focus on the mission and message of Dr. King. We hope it helps our young people understand what the civil rights movement was all about, and its relevance today, said Vanessa Cummings, a member of the Oxford NAACP and assistant director of parking services at Miami. The event will be held rain or shine. For more information call Juanita Tate, director of diversity initiatives in student affairs, at 529-5656 or Cummings at 529-8535. |
