Miami programmers take 10th place

A team of student computer programmers from Miami University placed 10th in the East Central North America Regionals of the 2004 Association for Computing Machinery International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Nov. 6.

Miami competed in a field of 131 teams from 71 schools.

The “Tech Olympics,” sponsored by IBM, is the world’s premier university competition in the computing sciences and engineering, according to Bill Poucher, ICPC executive director. During the five-hour contest, three-person teams solved complex problems using both traditional and new software development tools.

Over a three-month period, regional competitions held around the world will involve more than 3,000 teams from over 70 countries. Of these, 75 teams will compete at the World Finals in China.

Miami’s team, led by faculty advisor Mike Zmuda, associate professor of computer science and sysems analysis, included juniors Alex Argo and Chris T. Miller of West Chester and senior Raj Doshi of Middletown.

The other top 10 teams at the regional competition held at the University of Cincinnati were from the University of Waterloo, the University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toronto and Ohio University.

Miami has had an excellent record since participating in the ACM contest: average scores since 1998 place Miami ninth overall for the region.
