Pres. Garland asks "no" vote on issue 110/22/2004 |

Miami University President James Garland today (Oct. 22) issued a statement asking Ohioans to vote against State Issue 1, the proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. I want to add my voice to the chorus of business and community leaders, editorial boards, and elected representatives from both major political parties, who believe Issue 1 would be bad for Ohio, Garland said. My primary concern is with the issues vague wording, which threatens to take away rights already enjoyed by many Ohioans, Garland said. Constitutional amendments should be used to expand the rights of citizens and not diminish them. I am further concerned that this amendment would erect yet another barrier to business recruitment and economic development. I know for a fact that the issue would harm Miamis efforts to recruit faculty and staff members from other states," said Garland. Regardless of ones personal views about gay marriage, we all have an interest in making our state a welcoming and supportive environment for all citizens. The wording of Issue 1 would undermine this interest. |
