Rudolph Giuliani speaks at Miami Nov. 17

Rudolph Giuliani, former mayor of New York City, will speak at Miami University on "Leadership in Difficult Times," at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in Millett Hall.

His lecture, the fourth in the Jack R. Anderson Distinguished Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

While on campus, Giuliani will also meet with a group of students.

Giuliani served as mayor of New York City from 1994-2002.

While the international spotlight shone on him for his leadership after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Giuliani’s tenure was also marked by the “cleaning up” of Times Square, the reduction of welfare rolls by half and a large drop in crime.

Giuliani is also credited with turning the city’s $2.3 billion deficit into a multi-billion dollar surplus and with improving access to healthcare for children and families. He was named Time magazine’s Person of the Year in 2001.

A graduate of New York University Law School, Giuliani advanced in his legal career before being elected mayor. From 1970-75 he worked in the office of the U.S. attorney in New York, becoming chief of the narcotics unit and then U.S. attorney. In 1975 he moved to Washington, D.C., when he was named associate deputy attorney general and chief of staff to the deputy attorney general. He practiced private law for four years, then was named associate attorney general. In 1983 Giuliani was appointed U.S. attorney for the southern district of New York.

The lecture series is a gift from Jack R. Anderson ’47, president of Calver Corporation, to Miami’s Richard T. Farmer School of Business. “Rudolph Giuliani embodies integrity, drive and tenacity. He will communicate the overwhelming need for visionary leadership in business, government and the public arena,” said Roger Jenkins, dean of Miami’s school of business.
