Sophomore wins ad prize

05/28/2003

Dan Hayes, a sophomore mass communication major at Miami University, has earned second place and a $1,000 prize in a national competition to create the best advertisement about freedom.

The contest was sponsored by the Institute for Humane Studies.

Hayes’ ad features a Nigerian immigrant who has a doctorate and is a professor of history, but who has chosen to spend each Sunday for the past 15 years picking up cans and litter in his adopted hometown of Oxford, Ohio . The money he makes from selling the cans is donated to local churches.

The ad tells his story and says “each of us has the freedom to be as active or inactive as we please...how do you use your freedom?”

To see the ad, go to www.freedomads.org. The Institute for Humane Studies is an educational, non-profit organization at George Mason University that works to encourage popular discussion of freedom.
