Miami University President James C. Garland has announced the hiring of Brad Bates as Miami University's new director of athletics. Bates, 43, comes to Miami from Vanderbilt University, where he has served as the senior associate director of athletics since 1998. Bates has bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University of Michigan. He has a doctorate in education from Vanderbilt University. He replaces Joel Maturi, who left in July to become the director of athletics at the University of Minnesota. Bates is expected to begin at Miami by December 1.
