Jacqueline Hardgrove, a Miami University senior from Pickerington, was awarded an Astronaut Scholarship Foundation scholarship. Hardgrove, a microbiology major, was selected for the $8,500 award based on her academic record, laboratory research experience and exceptional performance in her field. She has been involved in research at Miami since her freshman year, working on a microbial ecology project with Robert Findlay, associate professor of microbiology. Last year she presented an abstract of her research, which involves the effectiveness of aquifers as filtration systems for groundwater, at the annual American Society for Microbiology conference. She will continue working in Findlays laboratory this fall, after spending the summer as an intern at Ohio State University working on a biomedical research project. Hardgrove plans to attend medical school after graduation. Miami is one of 17 schools selected to participate in the Astronaut Scholarship program. Supported by more than 30 former astronauts, the program was established to help the United States retain its leadership in science and technology by providing scholarships to upper-level college students and those pursuing masters or doctorates in the fields of science and engineering. |
