$160K grant to educational leadership dept.

04/23/2002

Miami University’s department of educational leadership has received a $159,961 Incentive Fund award from the Ohio Board of Regents (OBOR) for a national initiative on “Transforming Public Schools: The Intersection of Leadership, Culture and Schooling.”

The award is one of 21 granted out of 60 proposals received by OBOR.

The initiative plans include establishing a nationally recognized site for research and inquiry focused on the intersection of leadership, culture and schools; creating a new framework to educate school leaders (serving administrator and teacher preparation programs); and developing a collaborative partnership with selected state and national K-12 educators and scholars to influence public education change efforts.

A specific goal is to gather national leaders in school reform in a sustained five-year focus to bring educational leadership to a new level.

Miami’s department of educational leadership, which offers master’s and doctoral programs - was recently ranked 12th nationally in a study by the University Council of Educational Administration, and described as a “...nationally competitive graduate study center in educational leadership.”

The Incentive Fund was established by OBOR to encourage state-assisted universities to address critical state of Ohio needs including improving the state’s economic development, strengthening the state’s system of elementary and secondary education and improving public health and safety.
