Emily M. Garritson, a junior at Miami, has been awarded an Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship for the 2006-07 academic year.
The scholarships, up to $8,000 each, are given annually to approximately 100 students nationwide.
Garritson is an environmental science major in Miami's School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
The program is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education on behalf of the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA).
Scholarships are named in honor of Sen. Hollings, who retired in 2004 after serving 38 years in the U.S. Senate. Hollings was instrumental in the creation of the NOAA.
Scholarship recipients also receive a 10-week paid summer internship.
