Miami named a "hot school" by The Wall Street Journal

Miami University, where visits by prospective students are up 14 percent since late June, was listed Oct. 5 as one of this fall’s 16 “hot schools” by The Wall Street Journal. A panel of guidance counselors helped WSJ pick the schools, and one of the counselors described Miami as a “public ivy.” Visit our ratings and recognition site for more recent honors.

Excerpts from the Oct. 5 issue of The Wall Street Journal:

“This fall, safety and economic worries have changed the conventional wisdom of applying to college. Elizabeth Bernstein and Sarah Collins [report] on which schools are poised to be players.”

“While the economy, the stock market and even travel may recover, history suggests that the impact of global conflicts on education - from the colleges students select to the majors they choose - can stretch for years. ‘At times like these, public schools do better,’ says Jim McCoy, an associate vice president at Miami of Ohio, a state university that since June has seen a 14% increase in student visits over last year.”

“While competition is sure to be intense again this year, guidance counselors say urban locales may be a liability in some cases, even for schools far away from the crash sites.”

“Miami University: ‘A public Ivy,’ says one guidance counselor. The New England feel of the campus may attract Northeasterners.”
