$300,000 grant unites Miami and Ukraine

09/19/2000

Marcus Jobe, associate professor in Miami University’s decision sciences and management information systems department, has received a $300,000 grant from the U.S. Department of State to help fund a partnership between Miami University and Kiev State University of Trade and Economics, Ukraine.

Mark Hanna, associate professor of management, is also an investigator on the three-year project, which will involve instructional workshops, team teaching efforts and curriculum development designed to enhance the administration, curriculum content and instruction at one of Ukraine’s top business universities.

The grant will allow groups of faculty and administrators from Kiev to visit Miami to participate in joint panel discussions with faculty and administrators from the Richard T. Farmer School of Business and team teach sprint courses in statistical quality control and management with Jobe and Hanna.

In addition, the Ukrainians will participate in a month-long workshop designed to better the understanding of "the demands of the globally competitive marketplace and the resulting implications for business practice and education in Ukraine."

Jobe and Hanna will also team teach at Kiev, with one of them staying in the country for extended study and curriculum development.

Jobe, who received the Associated Student Government’s Outstanding Teacher Award in 1995, was a Fulbright Scholar to Kiev during the 1996-97 school year. Hanna received the 1995 Recognition for Effective Teaching award in the business school and the 1998 MBA teaching award.

Both professors have co-authored books that will be used in the project.
