Anne Morris Hooke, chair of Miami Universitys microbiology department, has been selected as the recipient of the American Society of Microbiologists Alice C. Evans Award. This award honors Hookes contributions toward the advancement of women within the science and profession of microbiology and in the ASM, which has 42,000 members worldwide. A Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, Hooke has been a committed advocate for women. Her service in national and local organizations includes membership in and chair (from 1986-95) of the Committee on the Status of Women in Microbiology, president of the Federation of Organizations for Professional Women, and mentoring in the Women as Leaders Program of the Washington Center. At Miami, Hooke has served as a member of the Presidents Continuing Commission on the Status of Women Faculty, Staff and Students and is a member of the Women in Math, Science and Engineering Support Group for Students. Her research has focused on the study of bacterial pathogenesis and the construction of genetically attenuated bacterial vaccines. |
