Two Miami University botany students received awards at the recent meeting of the American Society for Gravitational and Space Biology, held in Seattle, Wash. Tristan Kraft, 30 Dakota Road., Carbondale, Ill. 62901, a junior, received a trophy and cash prize for his presentation "Comparison of amyloplast position in Arabidopsis roots in different gravity environments." Karli Fitzelle, 5412 College Corner Road, Oxford, a student in the masters program, received a certificate and cash prize for her presentation "Restoration of gravitropic sensitivity in starch-deficient mutants of Arabidopsis by hypergravity." The students work with John Kiss, professor of botany at Miami, who has sent two experiments into space aboard shuttle flights. Kraft was a Hughes summer intern and Fitzelle has worked with Kiss since August 1998. |
