MIAMI MOCK TRIAL TEAM REGIONAL CHAMPIONS02/28/1997 |

OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University's Mock Trial Team successfully defended its Mideast Regional Championship recently at the Lucas County Courthouse in Toledo. Miami fielded two squads, one finishing first and the other finishing sixth. Both Miami squads qualified for the national tournaments to be held in April in St. Paul, Minn., and Des Moines, Iowa. Miami team members received five of the 20 awards presented. A total of 120 participants on 16 teams competed. Members of Miami's team are: Kim Mendenhall, 8525 Monticello Drive, West Chester 45069, who was honored as an outstanding attorney. A graduate of Lakota High School, she is a junior majoring in speech communication. Jason Wilcoxon, 8677 Goldfinch, West Chester, a graduate of Lakota High School, who is a freshman majoring in secondary education/history. Matt Fitzwater, 768 Martin St., Greenville, a sophomore majoring in political science. He is a graduate of Greenville High School. Shane Herzner, 3444 Church St., Newton 45244, a graduate of Turpin High School, who is a junior majoring in political science. Spencer Cordell, 6037 Country Hills, Cincinnati 45233, a graduate of Oak Hills High School, who is a junior majoring in mass communication. Wendy Thornburg, 8309 Glaze Road, New Holland 43145, a Miami Trace High School graduate, who is a sophomore majoring in diplomacy/foreign affairs. Ava Miller, 929 E. River St., Elyria, a senior majoring in political science. She is a graduate of Elyria High School. Amy Faust, 7480 Elbrook Ave., Cincinnati 45237, was honored as an outstanding witness. A graduate of Walnut Hills High School, she is a senior majoring in theatre. Dan Haughey, 152 Stone Creek Drive, Oxford, was honored as an outstanding attorney for the second year. A graduate of St. Xavier High School, Cincinnati, he is a senior majoring in English and political science. Lee Geiger, 9461 Shadyoak Court, Cincinnati 45231, a St. Xavier High School graduate, who is a senior majoring in political science. Amy Scholl, 1760 Baywood Drive, South Vienna 45369, a Northeastern High School graduate, who is a senior majoring in political science. Amy Kurey, 401 Cottonwood Court, Avon Lake 44012, received an outstanding witness award. A graduate of Avon Lake High School, she is a senior majoring in management. Loran Tipple, 625 Timberview Drive, Marysville, a Marysville High School graduate, who is a junior majoring in political science. John Kovac, 6290 Gatewood Drive, Mentor 44060, a graduate of Lake Catholic High School, is a senior majoring in marketing. Leslie Morsek, 8520 Greenwood Road, North Royalton 44133, a North Royalton High School graduate, who is a junior majoring in finance. Tiffany Gardner, 8350 Paragon Road, Centerville 45458, received an outstanding witness award. A graduate of Centerville High School, she is a senior majoring in English. Each squad is required to stage an actual trial with three witnesses and three attorneys at the mock trial competitions. Each squad competes against opponents before two judges and must compete in four rounds. Each judge scores the teams and determines a winner. The American Mock Trial Association conducts regional and national competitions. This is Miami's fourth year of intercollegiate competition. |
