OXFORD, Ohio -- Approximately $90,000 per year will be added to Miami University's student scholarships and loans thanks to a gift from the late Agnes Wagner McKie. Mrs. McKie's gift of $1.87 million will endow the Stanley and Agnes McKie Scholarship Fund for needy and deserving students. Awards will be available for the 1998-99 academic year. Mrs. McKie's husband, Stanley, class of 1919, was a member of Miami's board of trustees from 1965-69. The couple was very involved with Miami University, and knew they could best help students through such assistance, says Karel Simbartl of Miami's development office. Previous gifts from the McKies endowed the Stanley G. McKie Baseball Field at Miami in 1973 and the McKie Gallery in Miami's art museum, among others. Before his death in 1969, Stanley McKie served as president of the Cincinnati Board of Education from 1960-67 and president of the Cincinnati Recreation Commission from 1953-1960. He was an Ohio Representative, 1935-36, and Ohio State Senator, 1939-48. He served in numerous other civic roles. Agnes McKie was a supporter of the Cincinnati Association for the Blind, Cincinnati Children's Home and other organizations. She died in May. The McKies had no children. Their entire estate was left to help students at Miami and the University of Cincinnati. The scholarship fund is notable for the flexibility it gives Miami's financial aid office in making individual decisions based on students' needs, Simbartl said. |
