Seven projects receive Eisenhower funds09/22/1997 |

OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University has received seven awards totaling $391,588 from the Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development Program. The Ohio Board of Regents approved the release of more than $1.8 million to support 31 separate mathematics and science education improvement projects, linking 18 of Ohio's colleges and universities with school systems across the state. The Miami recipients, their awards and projects are as follows: Johnny Hill, associate professor of teacher education, and Rosemary Garmann, Hamilton County Education Service Center, $30,240, "TQM for TQS: Top Quality Mathematics for Top Quality Students." Iris DeLoach Johnson, assistant professor of teacher education, $35,658, "Miami Integrated Mathematics Project." Robert G. McWilliams, professor of geology emeritus, and Richard E. Lee Jr., professor of zoology, $89,308, "Using Native American Stories to Attain Ohio Elementary School Competency-based Science Standards." Anita Roychoudhury, associate professor of teacher education, Miami University Hamilton, $25,056, "Science is Doing and Asking: Collaboration Between Miami University and Local Schools." Catherine H. Mulligan, instructor, and Robert M. Dieffenbach, associate professor of mathematics and statistics, Miami University Middletown, $26,997, "The Ohio Inquiry Precalculus Consortium." Arlyne M. Sarquis, associate professor of chemistry, L. Handler and L Hogue, chemical education, Miami University Middletown, $89,780, "Science Integration in Today's Elementary Schools VI." Arlyne M. Sarquis, associate professor of chemistry, Miami University Middletown, $94,549, "Teaching Science with TOYS--Targeting Ohio." Eisenhower Program projects are designed to provide sustained, intensive, high-quality professional development opportunities for practicing teachers and address the special needs of populations that historically have lacked access to equal educational opportunities in the area of science and mathematics. |
