OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University is adding $700,000 to its scholarship pool to provide recognition and financial assistance to top-ranked students. Four new scholarship programs, including one for high school valedictorians, are being created. "Miami is nationally recognized as a best buy, but we want to guarantee that the most talented students continue to enroll here," said Miami President James C. Garland. The university currently provides about $4.8 million in merit and need-based scholarships. The four new award programs include: - Miami Scholars Award. This is a four-year, renewable award for
exceptional students with demonstrated financial need. Awards will be from $2,000 to $3,000. To be considered, students must rank in the top 15 percent of their class, have a 27 on the ACT or a 1200 or above on the SAT. - Valedictorian Scholarship. This is a four-year, renewable award of
$1,000 for those who rank first in their high school graduating class. Awards will be granted to the first 300 valedictorians who apply for admission. - National Merit Scholarship--Additional Match. Miami will award a
four-year, renewable award of $3,000 to National Merit finalists in addition to the traditional university match of $750 to $2,000. Total awards to National Merit finalists will range from $3,750 to $5,000 depending upon need. - Honors Award. A total of 300 one-time $500 recognition awards will
be given to students who enroll at Miami and are invited to participate in the university's honors program.
