OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami University ranks among the top 20 of the nation's colleges and universities for the rate of return on its endowment. The university earned 27 percent for the year that ended June 30, 1997, bringing the value of its investment portfolio to more than $155 million. A preliminary report by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) listed Miami as 19th best performer out of 375 colleges and universities surveyed. "We're pleased that the university has positioned itself to reap the benefits of the bull market," said Edward J. Demske, senior vice president for finance and university services. "But more important than the one-year performance is the fact that according to the NACUBO survey, Miami's performance for one, three and five years places us in the top 10 percent of the institutions surveyed," he said.
The strong endowment performance will have a long lasting impact on support of scholarships and other education programs, according to Demske. "We've been fortunate to have had a number of Miami alumni who have given their time and energy serving on the Investment Committee and as trustees of the Miami University Foundation," he said. These volunteers have helped design the university's asset allocation program and have assisted in selecting and monitoring the performance of the university's investment managers, Demske said. |
