Miami Breaks Records on Donations and Applications02/13/1998 |

Miami University trustees were told today that donations to the university last year topped $25 million, breaking the previous record of $17.8 million set in 1994 by more than 40 percent. Kenneth Burke, vice president for university relations, told trustees that the total is a testament to the people and programs at the university that have merited such support. Also, for the third year in a row, Miami has broken its record on the number of students applying for admission, according to Myrtis Powell, vice president for student affairs. She told trustees that applications currently total 11,650 and that when they are all counted the total is expected to exceed 12,000. Minority applicants are up 8 percent and applications from valedictorians are up 9 percent. Miami is aiming for a freshman class next fall of 3,350 students. Richard T. Farmer, chairman of the board of trustees, said both records represent significant achievements on the part of the university and congratulated those responsible. In other action, the board of trustees joined other campus groups in condemning all acts of bigotry, violence and hatred in wake of the Jan. 19 off-campus assault of a Miami student. The motion, adopted unanimously, encourages faculty, staff and students to take a stand and speak out against senseless violence. Trustees also:
