Burton Kaufman named Interdisciplinary Dean
OXFORD, Ohio -- Dr. Burton Kaufman, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, has been named dean of Miami University's School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
"Dr. Kaufman's enthusiasm for interdisciplinary studies and his interest in new ways of teaching and learning make him the ideal leader to build on and continue the strengths of the Western College program," said Provost Anne Hopkins.
Miami's School of Interdisciplinary Studies will benefit from the experience Kaufman gained at Virginia Tech, Hopkins noted.
Kaufman was chair of Virginia Tech's history department from 1988-95 before being appointed director of the university's newly established Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. While there he developed an innovative summer program aimed at encouraging minority students to pursue graduate degrees in history.
In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Kaufman has continued as an active scholar. He has written or edited seven books, including The Arab-Middle East and the United States: Inter-Arab Rivalry and Superpower Diplomacy (1996), and numerous articles and book chapters.
He previously taught at Kansas State University (1973-88) and Louisiana State University in New Orleans (1966-73).
He received a undergraduate degree from Brandeis University and a master's and doctorate from Rice University.
The appointment is subject to approval by Miami's board of trustees at the April 24 meeting.
