Cayton and Kirby receive Fulbright Awards

OXFORD, Ohio -- Andrew Cayton, professor of history, and Jack Kirby,

W.E. Smith Professor of History, at Miami University have been granted

Fulbright Awards for spring 1999.

Cayton will hold the John Adams Chair in American Studies at the University of

Leiden in the Netherlands. The Adams chair is awarded annually to a senior

scholar in American history.

Kirby will be a Fulbright senior lecturer at the University of Genoa. He will

teach a course on the environmental history of North America with the

assistance of a host colleague and will participate in the symposia of Lerda's

Center for Atlantic Studies.

Cayton has taught at Miami since 1990. Among his books are Contact Points:

American Frontiers from the Mohawk Valley to the Mississippi, Frontier

Indiana and The Midwest and the Nation: Rethinking the History of an

American Region. Cayton has received teaching awards including the 1993

Outstanding Teacher Award from the Ohio Academy of History and the Class of

1997 Associated Student Government Outstanding Teacher Award.

Kirby has taught at Miami since 1965. His books include The

Countercultural South, Poquosin: A Study of Rural Landscape and

Society and Rural Worlds Lost: The American South 1920-1960.

Established in 1946 under congressional legislation by former Senator J.

William Fulbright, the Fulbright program is administered by the U.S.

Information Agency. Its purpose is to "increase mutual understanding between

the people of the United States and the people of other countries."

Individuals are selected based on academic and professional qualifications and

on their ability and willingness to share ideas and experiences with people of

diverse cultures.
