Arkansas artist winner of Miami's ninth annual outdoor sculpture competition

OXFORD, Ohio -- Artist Pat Musick, winner of Miami University's ninth

annual outdoor sculpture competition, will be artist-in-residence at Miami

Sept. 21-25.

Musick, from Huntsville, Ark., will build her winning proposal, "Great Circle

Stanzas," on the lawn in front of Presser Hall during that week.

The sculpture will involve the construction of a large outer circle of

gate-like forms of steel and oak. There will be a smaller circle of red lava

stone within the outer circle and an interior circle of gray gravel and stone.

The sculpture relates to the Great Hopewell Circle, which was used as a vast

ceremonial center by its builders and is preserved in Moundbuilders State

Memorial near Newark, Ohio.

Musick's work and materials are about "the point on the fulcrum where man and

nature achieve a delicate balance...an equilibrium. "The works address

reconciliation and harmony as I struggle to create a sense of wholeness out of

the chaotic relationship we experience from mankind's imposition on the natural

world," she says.

Miami students will assist in the fabrication, construction and installation

of this site-specific work. Because of the intensity, time commitment and

educational benefit of working with a professional artist, students who assist

in the project can receive class credits for their participation.

The sculpture competition is funded by a gift from William (Miami '36) and

Dorothy Yeck of Dayton.

Musick will present a slide lecture about her work at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept.

22, in room 100 of Miami's art building.

A reception honoring the artist will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, on

the lawn of Presser Hall.
