Six Miami projects receive Eisenhower Funds

OXFORD, Ohio -- Miami has received six awards totaling $508,780 from

the Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development Program.

The Ohio Board of Regents approved the release of $2.4 million to support 40

math and science education improvement projects, linking 20 of the state's

colleges and universities and two non-profit educational organizations with

school systems statewide.

The Miami recipients, their awards and projects, are:

• Rosemary Garmann, visiting instructor of mathematics and statistics,

  $36,960, "Focus on Algebraic Thinking Project."

• Robert McWilliams, professor emeritus of geology, $94,597, "Using Native

  American Stories to Attain Ohio Elementary Competency-Based Standards."

• Iris Deloach Johnson, assistant professor of teacher education, $97,433,

  "Supporting Standards-based Mathematics Reform for Northwest Local School

  District and Miami University."

• A.M. Sarquis, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and L.

  Hogue, associate director of chemistry education, "Teaching Science with TOYS

  -- Targeting Ohio II."

• A.M. Sarquis, $99,652, "Blending Reading, Investigation, and Discovery into

  the Goals of Elementary Science."

• J.L. Sarquis, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, $80,000, "ADDING:

  Adding Context + Technology + Inquiry--Very Exciting."

Eisenhower program projects are designed to provide sustained, intensive,

high-quality professional development opportunities for practicing teachers.

The program also addresses the special needs of populations that historically

have lacked access to equal science and math education opportunities.
