Selective publics form recruitment consortium

OXFORD, Ohio -- A recently formed consortium of nine public

universities with selective admission policies is expected to enhance Miami

University's efforts to recruit students nationwide.

Consortium members include Binghamton University (SUNY), College of William

and Mary, Georgia Institute of Technology, Miami, University of Colorado at

Boulder, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Oregon,

University of Vermont and University of Virginia.

By pooling outreach efforts, Miami and its partner universities will be able

to recruit top students more efficiently and effectively, said James McCoy,

associate vice president for enrollment at Miami and founder of the

consortium.

"As the advertising slogan goes, we like the company we keep," said McCoy,

explaining that the consortium includes some of the most prestigious public

universities in the country.

The first consortium activity will be a California tour Nov. 8-11. The deans

and director of admission from the nine universities will be holding joint

receptions for students and families and breakfast meetings with guidance

counselors in San Francisco, La Jolla, Irvine and Los Angeles.

Other tours and joint projects such as mailings that emphasize choosing

a public university are planned for the future .

Scheduling joint activities that involve nationally known public universities

is a convenience for families and prospective students. It also will be a more

efficient, cost-effective way to tell more people about Miami, said McCoy.

One of the goals of Miami's admission efforts is to increase the number

of students who apply to the university who live outside the Midwest, said

McCoy. "Promoting diversity of all types in our student body, including

geographical diversity, adds to the education all students receive."
