November events in Native American culture

OXFORD, Ohio -- The following events are scheduled in November, Native American Indian Heritage Month, at Miami University as part of a yearlong celebration of Native American culture.

*7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, Miami University Art Museum. Stephen H. Lekson lectures on "Land, Ceremony and Power in the Ancient Southwest."

*4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, Bachelor Reading Room, Bachelor Hall. Follow-up discussion to October talk by Jill Lepore, professor of history at Boston University and author of The Name of War: King Phillip's War and the Origins of American Identity.

*8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, Bishop Hall Living Room. Jake Swamp, spiritual chief of the Iroquois nation, will speak on "Native American Religious Practices."

*7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, Shriver Center multipurpose room A. Beverly Neal of Ohio State University will speak on "Contemporary Native American Women."

*During November a Native American video series will run nightly at 9 p.m. on Ch. 17, CETV (Campus Events Television) in the residence halls:

Nov. 1-6 "Powwow Highway," about the plight of Native Americans, will be featured.

Nov. 7-13 "The Spirit of Crazy Horse" reveals the modern Sioux

struggle to regain their heritage and lost territory following the massacre at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota.

Nov. 14-20 "Three Rivers in Time," a historical study of the early Old

Northwest Territory spanning 200 years, will be shown.

Miami's dining halls will feature meals from Native American recipes during the week of Nov. 9-13 and a "first Thanksgiving special dinner" Nov. 17.

The Native American cultural programs are a collaborative initiative funded by the division of student affairs and the office of liberal education.
