Family Studies and Social Work receives accreditation

05/03/1999

Miami University's department of family studies and social work was accredited recently by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), the premier national accrediting body for social work education programs.

"We're very pleased," said Ellie Brubaker, director of the program. "This is our first national accreditation. It will give our students much more credibility when they apply for jobs and graduate programs."

Interim Dean Curt Ellison described the accreditation as "a notable accomplishment that recognizes solid academic design and underscores the commitment of Miami's School of Education and Allied Professions to preparing professionals for service to youth, communities and educational institutions."

Miami's unique approach to teaching social work combines traditional course work and field experiences with the study of family dynamics for a thorough, contemporary approach to social work.

"The combination of family studies and social work was noted by the CSWE as a major strength of our program. We hope to continue developing that connection in coming years," Brubaker said.

The rigorous accreditation process began in 1994 and involved developing new curriculum, designing courses and renewing professional commitments. The program graduated its first class-three people-in 1997. Currently, there are 60 majors and 73 pre-majors working toward degrees. Twelve graduate this May, and 20 are expected to graduate in spring 2000.
