Miami among top public universities: U.S. News & World Report

08/17/2007

Miami University is ranked 27th among the top public universities in the nation, according to the just-released U.S. News & World Report college rankings. In addition, Miami placed 67th in the overall (public and private) national rankings.

For the third consecutive year, Miami has been spotlighted in the magazine's "Programs to Look For" section, described as "outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success." Miami is cited for its learning communities programs and its programs in "Writing in the Disciplines."

At Miami, students live in themed residence halls that provide special classes and opportunities in areas they're interested in, such as health, a foreign language, leadership, honors or the arts.

U.S. News also recognized Miami as one of the 28 colleges listed that "typically make the writing process a priority at all levels of instruction and across the curriculum. Students are encouraged to produce and refine various forms of writing for different audiences in different disciplines."

In addition, Miami's engineering department is ranked 38th in the category of "Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs where the highest degree is a bachelor's or master's" and its Farmer School of Business ranked 48th in the "Best Undergraduate Business Programs" category.

Once again, Miami's strongest scores in the U.S. News rankings come in the category of "over-performance" by students, meaning that Miami students graduate well above the average for their peers. Miami's graduation rate is 81 percent, much higher than the percentage rate of 69 predicted by U.S. News, giving the university an "over-performance spread" of 12 percentage points.

President David C. Hodge said, "Miami's continued strong performance in these rankings is testament to the exceptional academic experience Miamians have. We are especially proud of our "over-performance" and "programs to look for" designations that reflect our relentless emphasis on student success and the dedication of our students, faculty, staff and alumni."

The U.S. News rankings are based on several key measures of quality including peer assessment, retention and graduation rates (including the proportion of the student body receiving Pell grants), faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and graduation rate performance. Highlights of the college rankings will be in the magazine's August 27 issue, on sale Monday, August 20, along with the America's Best Colleges guidebook.
