Venelin Ganev author of Preying on the State

Venelin Ganev, assistant professor of political science, is the author of Preying on the State: The Transformation of Bulgaria after 1989, published in June by Cornell University Press.

Focusing on his native Bulgaria, Ganev explores the weakening of the central state in post-Soviet Eastern Europe. He demonstrates that those involved in its collapse were members of the state itself or economic elites with old state connections and knowledge.

A major contribution to the study of Eastern European history and political science, the book has already garnered praise by scholars in the field.

"This is a wonderfully provocative, thoughtful articulate and learned book. Venelin I. Ganev's interpretations will appeal to scholars not only of postcommunism but also of the state, informal institutions, and institutional transformation," wrote Anna Grzymala-Busse of the University of Michigan.
