Six hundred and ninety schools are on the 2013 honor roll with only 113 receiving Honor Roll with Distinction.
Last year Miami was one of only five recipients in the nation to receive a Presidential Award among honor roll schools.
Miami, in its sixth appearance on the honor roll, estimated that from July 2011 to June 2012, 13,510 students performed about 337,500 hours of service*.
These representative projects were submitted on the CNCS application:
- Sharefest is an annual end-of-academic-year service, recycling and environmental effort in which Miami students (on and off campus) donate usable furniture, clothing and food to benefit area social service agencies and community members;
- Pledge-A-Meal/Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is a week to educate students, faculty/staff and community members about the issues of hunger and homelessness while working to alleviate these problems through service and philanthropy. Nearly 2,200 students donated one lunch meal (through support from HDRBS) to raise $9,025 to benefit regional shelters at which our students serve;
- Adopt A School(AAS)/Service-Learning: The office for community engagement and service (OCES) partners with 23 schools, after-school programs and community-based agencies in four area school districts through AAS and Service-Learning programs. In its 22 years of continuous existence, AAS has served thousands of children in Oxford and the Greater Cincinnati area. AAS is a volunteer program that, combined with Service-Learners, consists of 1,175 Miami students serving the educational needs of area youth.

“We’re thrilled to receive this award, which acknowledges the office of community engagement and service’s success in forging effective partnerships, particularly in advancing Service-Learning on Miami’s campus. Service-Learning is a recognized, mutually beneficial practice that enhances students’ education while meeting communities’ identified needs,” said Monica Ways, OCES director.
Service-Learning designated courses at Miami range from business to statistics, architecture to zoology and more.
The CNCS is a federal agency that engages more than five million Americans in service through Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, the Social Innovation Fund and other programs, and leads President Obama’s national call to service initiative, United We Serve.
