International Music and Power Conference Feb. 28-March 202/19/2013 |

An international conference on "Music and Power," organized and sponsored by the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post-Soviet Studies, will be held at Miami University Feb. 28-March 2. The conference features a gala concert March 1 with internationally renowned Chinese violinist Bin Huang; a chamber music recital, keynote lectures and panels with invited scholars. The conference opens with a chamber music recital with music faculty Tze Yean Lim, violin, and Siok Lian Tan, piano, at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 in Souers Recital Hall. A keynote lecture follows at 5:30 p.m. by Richard Taruskin, professor of musicology at the University of California, Berkeley. A student-led recital, “Art Songs of Post-Soviet Composers,” will be held at noon Feb. 28 in Souers Recital Hall. Events March 1-2, unless otherwise noted, will be held in 212 MacMillan Hall, and are free and open to the public. Conference highlights include: Friday, March 1 Panel One, 9:30-11:30 a.m.: Film and Popular Music Keynote lecture, 12:30 p.m.: James Loeffler, associate professor of history, University of Virginia. author of The Most Musical Nation: Jews and Culture in the late Russian Empire Panel Two, 2-4 p.m.: Politics of Censorship 6:30 p.m.: Student poster Presentation and reception, Hall Auditorium lobby 7:15 p.m. : Pre-concert lecture by Bruce Murray, chair and professor of music, at Hall Auditorium 8 p.m.: Gala Concert: Censorship and The Right of Expression,” Hall Auditorium.
