Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band concert Feb. 20 features original "Rhapsody in Blue"

The Miami University Wind Ensemble, conducted by Gary Speck, and the Symphony Band, conducted by Stephen Lytle, will perform a joint concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Hall Auditorium. Pianist Bruce Murray, chair and professor of music, will join the Wind Ensemble as soloist on the original 1924 orchestration of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue."

The Wind Ensemble will also perform Symphony No. 4 by David Maslanka. The piece, which draws on such disparate influences as J.S. Bach, Goethe and the Doxology, is considered one of the most significant works for wind ensemble in the last 20 years.

The Symphony Band will perform “Sandburg Reflections” with soloist Liz Malanga, mezzo-soprano and graduate student in music performance. They will also perform “Commando March” by Samuel Barber and “Pas Redouble” by Camille Saint-Saëns.

The concert is free.

Bruce Murray Performs Again Feb. 24

Murray will perform again at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in Souers Recital Hall, for the “The Piano In-Depth” music series. The program will be devoted to works by Mozart.
