Miami University will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a peace march and commemoration program featuring speaker Carl Westmoreland Monday, Jan. 21. The peace march will begin at 10 a.m. starting at the Uptown Parks in Oxford and ending at Hall Auditorium. The program will begin at 11 a.m. in Hall Auditorium. Westmoreland is the senior advisor for historic preservation at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. He has been involved in the founding and development of the Center, which opened its doors in 2004 and has since become a major draw for visitors in Cincinnati. He also serves as curator for its main exhibit, the Slave Pen. Westmoreland is a leader in urban revitalization and preservation. He became the first African-American Trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in the 1970s, and in 1993 he received the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award from the National Trust for his dedication to both revitalizing and preserving inner-city neighborhoods and fostering awareness of urban issues, poverty and race relations.
All Miami and Oxford community members are invited to join the peace march and commemoration program. The events are sponsored by Miami’s office of diversity affairs and the Center for American and World Cultures. |
