Miami University's Over-the-Rhine Residency Program received accolades in the national competition for the C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award. Miami's program narrowly missed winning the Magrath Award, announced at the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities annual conference in November.

“While we were not selected, I am gratified that our Residency Program was held in such high regard,” said Thomas Dutton, Cincinnati Professor of Community Engagement, architecture and interior design, and director of the Miami University Center for Community Engagement in Over-the-Rhine. “And we did get a lot of exposure during the presentation at the conference,” Dutton added.

Over-the-Rhine Residency Program One of Four Regional Winners of the 2012 Outreach Scholarship Award

The Over-the-Rhine Residency Program was one of four regional winners of the 2012 Outreach Scholarship/W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award. The regional winners, named last May, competed for the national Magrath University Community Engagement Award.

The Outreach Scholarship and the Magrath Award identify colleges and universities that have redesigned their learning, discovery and engagement functions to become even more involved with their communities.

Regional winners presented their programs during the National Outreach Scholarship Conference in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in September.

“Because of our presentation in Alabama, two universities have sent teams to Over-the-Rhine to meet with us to learn more about what we do,” Dutton said. “Ohio State University and the University of Louisville, which is moving forward to start their own residency program, both visited in October.”

The Over-the-Rhine Residency Program, established in 2006, “is becoming more and more known across the country as an excellent example of a long-term community/university collaboration, built on trust and relationships that take time to mature,” Dutton said.
