Ridilla teaching and performing in Russia; part of growing faculty visits abroad

Andrea Ridilla, Miami University professor of music, is performing with the Pacific Symphonic Orchestra and teaching master classes at Primorye Regional Philharmonic Hall in Vladivostok, Russia, October 14-28.

She will perform as lead oboist and English horn player in two concertos with the 70-member orchestra. Ridilla’s visit is part of the U.S. Department of State musical collaboration program, “American Seasons in Russia.” The program aims to facilitate cultural exchange and improve people-to-people relations between Russia and the United States.

She has performed and instructed in many countries, including Venezuela, Taiwan, Ecuador, Korea, France, Italy, Spain and Macedonia.

Many Miami faculty bring their professional expertise to other nations. According to the office of lifelong learning, 229 faculty and staff led study abroad programs in 48 countries during the 2011-2012 academic year.

David Keitges, director of international education, says in addition to facilitating student programs, faculty travel abroad to lecture, perform, attend conferences or conduct research abroad.

For instance, more than 50 Miami faculty have traveled abroad as Fulbright scholars through the U.S. Department of State for research and cultural immersion. (See attached list in a PDF format.)

The university is developing an electronic system to record increasing numbers of faculty traveling abroad through the offices of international education and lifelong learning. This system could be implemented as early as May 2013.

Ridilla is currently principal oboe of the Classical Music Festival in Eisendstadt, Austria, and of the Middletown Symphony. She was principal oboe of the Festival International Echternach Orchestra in Luxembourg from 1991-2007.

“More than any other instrument, the oboe is played with drastic variations in nuance all over the world,” Ridilla added.

Faculty Development Fund for International Travel

Fifty Miami faculty received the Faculty Development Fund for International Travel from the office of international education in 2011-2012. The fund offers partial financial support to faculty making invited research presentations at international conferences or professional meetings abroad.

Departments represented include: anthropology, art, botany, chemical and paper engineering, comparative religion, economics, electrical and computer engineering, English, French and Italian, German, Russian and East Asian languages, history, information systems and analytics, kinesiology and health, mathematics, microbiology, music, physics, political science, psychology, Spanish and Portuguese, speech pathology and audiology, statistics, teacher education, Western program, and zoology.

Countries visited include: Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Colombia, Cuba, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Mauritius, Mexico, Micronesia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom.
