"Flipzoids," theatre's SecondStage production, opens Oct. 2410/16/2012 |

"Flipzoids" by Ralph Peña, directed by theatre graduate student Ronica Jhena Arntzen, will be performed at 8 p.m. Oct. 24-27 and at 2 p.m. Oct. 27 and 28. The performance is in the department of theatre's SecondStage production at Studio 88 Theatre. Set on a deserted beach in Southern California, the play focuses on the story of three generations of Filipino immigrants who are searching to understand their identity in a new American world. Peña is a founding member and current artistic director of Ma-Yi Theatre Company, an Obie Award and Drama Desk-winning Asian-American theatre group in New York City. He received an Obie Award for his work on “The Romance of Magno Rubio.” He is a member of the Ensemble Studio Theater, a leading not-for-profit theatre company based in New York City. Arntzen is a second-year theatre graduate student with a research focus on theatre and performance of the Filipino-American diaspora. A Filipino native, she grew up in Florida and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Florida. Panel Discussion, 4 p.m. Oct. 24, Studio 88 A panel discussion, “Stories grow from trees: Filipino-American Stories of Culture, Identity, Economics, and the Post-Colonial Body” will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, in Studio 88 Theatre. Panelists include Provost Bobby Gempesaw; Elizabeth Reitz Mullenix, chair and professor of theatre; Paul Jackson, professor of theatre and Arntzen’s adviser; Arntzen; Brian Roley, associate professor of English; Nicolyn Woodcock, graduate student in English; and Pam Monteleone, associate professor of English, University of North Florida. October is Filipino-American Heritage Month.
