Miami University hosts national education event

Educators from across the country gathered at Miami University this weekend to discuss undergraduate education at the inaugural Institute for Cultivating a Superior Liberal Arts Education in the 21st Century. The event helped form partnerships among select high schools and colleges in an effort to establish the best practices for an excellent liberal arts education.

Among the more than 50 high schools and colleges that attended, lead presenters at the two-day institute included:

•Duke University
•College of William and Mary
•Oberlin College
•University of North Carolina

The event promoted curricular and program ideas, developed communication strategies and enhanced knowledge. Participants return to their schools with ideas they would like to implement at their institutions and then will take action steps to further the value of a liberal arts education.

The institute was conducted in five sessions, including: best practices, innovative curricula, effective partnerships, emerging technology and envisioning a liberal arts education in the future. Ideas shared include dual enrollment courses, mentoring to help the college admissions process, using technology to advance liberal arts education through flipped classrooms, online simulations and tablets, and more. A sample of ideas about characteristics of students and faculty in classrooms going forward is attached below.

This year’s event was organized by Miami University and Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati. Miami will also host next year’s event.
