Zoology students sweep presentation awards at Ohio Valley Chapter of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry annual meeting

Five Miami students - two undergraduates and three graduate students - won awards at the Ohio Valley Chapter (OVC) of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) annual meeting held in Oxford Sept. 27-28.

Awards for Best Platform Presentations went to students of James Oris, professor of zoology and associate provost for research and scholarship and dean of the Graduate School.

• Alison Willis, master’s student in zoology, won best Graduate Student Platform Presentation and $300 for "Species sensitivity to photo-induced toxicity in sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegates) and zebrafish (Danio rerio), and inter-specific variability in LC50s for three phototoxic PAHs (fluoranthene, pyrene, anthracene) in zebrafish."

• Leah Thornton, senior zoology major, won best Undergraduate Student Platform Presentation and $200 for “Development of the sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) as a model organism for immunotoxicity."

Awards for Best Poster Presentations went to students of Michelle Boone, associate professor of zoology:

• Samantha Rumschlag, doctoral student in the Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology (EEEB) program, tied for Best Graduate Student Poster Presentation and received $200 for “The Effects of Malathion and timing of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis Exposure on Gray Treefrogs (Hyla chrysoscelis).”

• Tyler Hoskins, master’s student in zoology, tied for best Graduate Student Poster Presentation and received $200 for “Variation in tolerance of insecticides with varying modes of action within a population of Blanchard’s cricket frogs (Acris crepitans).”

• Rayona Wise, senior zoology major, won Best Undergraduate Student Poster Presentation and $100 for “The Effects of Malathion and Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis Exposure on American Toads (Anaxyrus americanus).”
