Miami University student employees will enjoy improved service and a faster payroll process starting in mid-October thanks to an internal Leveraging Efficiencies and Aligning Needs (LEAN) initiative across several university departments.
LEAN has effectively reduced student payroll processing time by 21 percent. As a result, students will now be paid biweekly on Tuesdays rather than Fridays.
Payroll scheduled to dispense on Oct.19 will be available to students on Oct. 16 (the preceding Tuesday), and every two weeks on Tuesdays thereafter.
The biweekly student pay period will begin on Saturdays and end on Fridays at midnight (no change from current practice).
In March 2012, a LEAN team began examining the student employee payroll process from punch to pay and in August identified best practices and opportunities for improvement.
This university team consisted of Heather Bechtol, student employment, Judy Johnson, university libraries, Deb Mulcahey, intercollegiate athletics, Barb Ribble, housing, dining, recreation and business services, Rachel Steck, regional campuses, Julie Schlichter, physical facilities, and Marcy VanWinkle and Anne Wheeler, payroll department.
The LEAN team also implemented a reduction in transition time from student employee to permanent hire, improvements in manager training and online reference material, and additional online aids for punch tracking. Projects that will require IT support were also identified and will be submitted through the university’s project implementation process for consideration.
Previous university LEAN initiatives have promoted energy conservation across campus and reduced costs for housing, dining, recreation and business services.
