University Senate action Sept. 24

On Monday, Sept. 24, University Senate heard reports from: Provost Bobby Gempesaw, chair of University Senate; James Kiper, chair, Executive Committee of University Senate; and a report from the Sept. 21, 2012, meeting of Miami University's board of trustees.

Senate received the following items on the consent calendar: curriculum report, Senate committee minutes and the Athletic Policy Committee’s report on graduation and retention rates of Miami’s student athletes.

Senate heard a report from the Miami 2020 Plan Coordinating Team, co-chaired by James Kiper and Phyllis Callahan. Reporting from the Target Goal Teams were: A. John Bailer (Goal 1: innovative learning and discovery), Bob Dahlstrom (Goal 2: transformational work environment), Denis Baszile (Goal 3: global engagement and inclusive culture), Joseph Rode (Goal 4: dynamic organizational design) and Kevin Bush (Goal 5: effective partnerships and outreach).

Senate endorsed (1) the department of biology, a merger of the departments of botany and zoology; and (2) the concept to revise Miami’s academic review process charging the Academic Program Review Committee to propose specific review process guidelines for Senate’s consideration.

With the approval of the Sept. 10, 2012, minutes Senate endorsed Senate Resolution SR 13-01.

SR 13-01
BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that University Senate adopt the proposed major, biology, bachelor of arts and bachelor of science.
SR 13-01 carried by voice vote.

(Twenty-five members of Faculty Assembly can challenge the resolution by filing a petition with the Office of the University Secretary during the ten class days after publication in the e-Report.)

The next meeting of University Senate will be held at 3:15 p.m. Oct. 8, 111 Harrison Hall.
