Norma Cantu, professor emerita of English at the University of Texas, San Antonio, will present “Fiestas in Texas: Exploring Borderlands Cultural Production” at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Shriver Center Heritage Room. Her talk is part of the UniDiversity program organized by the Center for American and World Cultures. Cantu’s presentation explores key celebrations found in Laredo, Texas, a south Texas city located across the river from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas in northern Mexico, and their role in community building and the creation of mestizaje or hybridity-borderland culture. The fiestas are religious, social, and political in nature and function at various levels of "community" in that each is celebrated by specific residents in Laredo. Cantu specializes in folklore, Latina/o literatures and border studies, among other subjects. She has co-edited four books and edited a collection of testimonials by Chicana scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Her award winning book Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera chronicles her childhood experiences on the border. Her talk is sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures and the department of Spanish and Portuguese. |
