Miami University named a Military Friendly School

G.I. Jobs magazine has named Miami University a 2013 Military Friendly School. The list recognizes the top 15 percent of national colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans and spouses as students.

The 1,739 institutions on this year’s list exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.
Criteria for qualifying schools include offering military students scholarships and discounts, veterans’ clubs, military credit, certifications and other services.

This year, over 12,000 Veteran Affairs-approved schools were researched and surveyed to compile the list. G.I. Jobs raised its stringent measures to an even higher benchmark by including military student evaluations and feedback in the ranking decisions.

“Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools shows Miami University’s commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, director for G.I. Jobs.

This is the fourth year that G.I. Jobs has released a list of Military Friendly Schools.

Miami offers no-interest loans to enrolled veterans

This academic year, Miami and Ohio State University have received credit for providing extra service to enrolled veterans whose Veterans Affairs benefits are delayed in arriving.

Miami is offering no-interest loans of up to $1,500 for 60 days to the 70 veteran students at Miami. Only a few students have accepted the offer so far.

“Delays have happened before,” said Brent Shock, director of Miami’s student financial assistance office. “My staff is happy to help our veteran students and we all know, flexibility is appreciated.”

The benefits cover personal/living expenses and there are no caveats on how students use the money.

Executive director of Student Veterans of America Michael Dakduk, publicly acknowledged Miami and Ohio State universities Sept. 5 for offering no-interest loans in support of student veterans:

"I am gratified to see that The Ohio State University and Miami University have stepped up to support student veterans and military family members affected by late payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Universities can either choose to complain about delayed benefits, or they can follow The Ohio State University and Miami University model of creating unique solutions to a long-standing problem.

I hope to see more universities stepping up to offer support to veterans on campus.”
