A film screening and discussion of "The Invisible War," an investigative documentary about the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military, will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, in 212 Macmillan Hall. The event, sponsored by the women's center, is a follow-up to the Summer Reading Program book Shade It Black. “The Invisible War,” by filmmaker Kirby Dick, won an Audience Award at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. As ranks of women in the American military swell, so do incidents of rape. An estimated 30 percent of servicewomen and at least 1 percent of servicemen are sexually assaulted during their enlistment, not by the enemy, but at the hands of fellow soldiers. The U.S. Defense Department estimates that 22,800 violent sex crimes were committed in the military last year alone. The documentary exposes a rape epidemic in the armed forces, investigating the institutions that perpetuate it as well as its profound personal and social consequences. A discussion after the film screening will be facilitated by Rhonda Jackson of the women's center and Terri Spahr-Nelson, therapist and writer. For more information contact Jackson at 9-1510 or jacksorj@muohio.edu. |
