Miami University celebrates its 10th annual Latin American and Caribbean UniDiversity Festival Friday, Sept. 21, at the Uptown Parks in Oxford. The festival, themed “10 Years Fostering Multicultural Engagements" runs 5:30-9:30 p.m. and is free and open to all.
A featured addition to this year’s festival is San Francisco-based hip-hop artist Paul Flores. The Cincinnati-based Latin music ensemble El Son Del Caribe, considered the top salsa band in Ohio, will also perform. Food, music, dance, traditional arts and crafts, children’s activities, “Silly Safari” live animal show, information booths and prizes are part of the festival that celebrates the peoples and cultures that are emerging as the largest minority group in the United States. The program includes: • Welcome, 5:30 p.m.
• Silly Safari live animal show, 5:45 p.m. • “El Corazón de Mexico,” Ballet Folklórico, 6:15 p.m. • 10th Anniversary Celebration and International Peace Day Parade 7 p.m. • Paul Flores, Hip-Hop performance 7:15 p.m. • El Son Del Caribe, Salsa band, 8 p.m. Paul Flores, poet, playwright and performance artist, is a theater artist specializing in hip-hop and bilingual performance. was recently named the San Francisco Weekly’s 2011 Best Politically Active Hip-Hop Performance Artist. He is co-founder of Youth Speaks, and teaches hip-hop theater and spoken word at the University of San Francisco. Cincinnati-based Latin music ensemble El Son Del Caribe, one of Ohio’s top Salsa bands, is directed by trombonist Jaime Morales, associate professor of music at Miami. A classical composer, conductor and arranger, he is also a top salsa musician from Puerto Rico who has played alongside such Latin music legends as Eddie Palmieri and Gilberto Santa Rosa. The festival, co-sponsored by the Center for American and World Cultures and the office of diversity affairs, is part of UniDiversity, a series of events planned at Miami to highlight National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15.
It is supported by many campus organizations and in partnership with Miami’s Latin American Students Association and Talawanda Middle School and High School. |
