New Alumni Factor ranking places Miami among highest in the nation and tops in Ohio

Miami University ranks 47 among 104 national universities included in The Alumni Factor, a new college-ranking platform that launched Sept. 10. Miami ranks 26 among public universities.

The Alumni Factor uses alumni data to rate schools based on how successful their graduates are in their careers and lives. The Alumni Factor findings are based on surveys and interviews with more than 42,000 alumni during the past four years. Researchers measured 15 different factors, including income, net worth, job opportunities, intellectual development and overall happiness.

Overall, Miami ranks 104 among 177 colleges and universities of all types out of more than 450 schools surveyed. Between 100-500 alumni from each school were anonymously surveyed via an online survey.

Miami’s highest rankings were in the categories of social development (17), and happiness (21) among national universities. The university also ranks high in its employment rank (26 overall) and is the only Mid-American Conference school to make the 2012 list.

Other rankings include:

College Experience: 38 (national universities) and 98 (overall)
Overall Assessment: 40 (national universities) and 80 (overall)
Financial Success: 76 (national universities) and 123 (overall)
Alumni Giving: 52 (national universities) and 115 (overall)
Graduation Rate: 50 (national universities) and 106 (overall)
Preparation for Career Success: 40 (national universities) and 89 (overall)
Value for the Money: 42 (national universities) and 76 (overall)

"With the rising cost of tuition and the nation's alarmingly high student loan debt, students and parents crave quantifiable data that measures the expected return of investment, and the value of an education at one school versus another," said Monica McGurk, executive editor and CEO of The Alumni Factor. Alumni outcomes offer a new way to calculate that return on investment.

The findings are based on four years of data collection, statistical research and an independent review led by a Georgia Tech University statistician. The list of colleges was narrowed to rank the 177 top colleges and universities included in The Alumni Factor report. In-depth profiles of the 177 ranked schools are included in recently published book, The Alumni Factor.

Ohio schools in the overall rankings include Ohio State University at 125; and private schools, Kenyon College (62); Oberlin College (73); Xavier University (90); Ohio Northern University (154); and Case Western Reserve University (158).
