Lowery Bretz’s research focuses on chemistry education research. Prior to joining Miami in 2005, she developed a graduate program in chemistry education research at Youngstown State University that gained a national reputation as a highly effective model for the professional development of high school chemistry teachers. Her research has been supported by more than $2 million in grants from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education and the Ohio Board of Regents. Among other service for the ACS on the committee and national levels, Lowery Bretz currently serves as a member of the executive committee of the ACS Division of Chemical Education and is chair of the board of trustees for the ACS Examinations Institute. She is also a member of the National Academy of Science National Research Council Committee on Discipline-Based Research. Among other awards, she received Miami’s E. Philips Knox Teaching Award in 2009. She was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2010. She is the department of chemistry and biochemistry’s Volwiler Distinguished Research Professor for 2012-2015. The ACS Fellows program began in 2009 as a way to recognize and honor ACS members for outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession, and ACS. The new ACS Fellows will be honored at the society’s fall national meeting in Philadelphia next month. Lowery Bretz is the first faculty member at Miami to be named an ACS Fellow. |
