Miami University’s partnership and community engagement efforts continue during the summer months, and in fact, coordinators are seeking volunteers for several initiatives, including the Oxford Senior’s home delivered meal program.
Kevin Bush, director of the Miami Partnership Office (located in the School of Education, Health and Society) and Monica Ways, director of the Office of Community Engagement and Service (CES), in the division of student affairs, outline below several programs in which employees and students take Miami to the community.
- Faculty, staff and students fill a number of positions for the Oxford Seniors, including home delivery of meals, shopping assistance, teaching classes (such as exercise, various languages and cultures), odd jobs assistance, drivers and more. This summer, organizers hope to sign up more staff and faculty volunteers for the home delivered meal program. Those interested should contact Jennifer Marcum at 513-523-810. - Miami’s CES has partnered with the Booker T. Washington Community Center (BTWCC) in Hamilton for almost a decade, during the school year and summer. Through a grant by the Ohio Campus Compact, students, faculty and staff have teamed up with the board and staff to offer summer programming with the potential to impact programming at the center next academic year and beyond. CES director Ways says more than 35 Miami students from all three campuses are involved in the Healthy Futures summer programming. BTWCC youth are planting a community garden, doing crafts related to healthy food choices and engaging in fun-filled physical activities to keep them moving. - Hamilton Living Water Ministry (HLWM), one of the CES’s longest-standing partnerships, has a summer program, Super Star Summer, in session from June 11-Aug. 2 that offers educational, fun activities for about 150 children/day in grades K-12. The program runs noon-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday and needs one-time and ongoing volunteers to assist in classrooms, help with meal preparation, or put together weekend (healthy meal) backpacks. Additionally, it welcomes people to share gardening, music or art skills. Spanish speaking volunteers are also needed. For more information, contact Hailee Gibbons at gibbonhm@muohio.edu . - Another longstanding partner and popular service site, the Animal Adoption Foundation (AAF) in Hamilton is a non-profit no-kill shelter for dogs and cats that have been abused or abandoned. AAF seeks summer volunteers to assist with the Walk A Hound and Meow Mingle programs. No prior training is required, but volunteers are asked to pre-register by visiting www.aafvolunteer.eventbrite.com. Contact CES if transportation is needed, at 529-2961.
This spring, Miami was honored as one of only five recipients in the nation of the Presidential Award in the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Efforts in both the Office of Community Engagement and Service and the Miami Partnership Office supported Miami’s nomination for the award.
