Miami announces automatic merit scholarship at regional campuses

05/17/2012

Miami University's regional campuses are taking a significant step toward making Miami accessible to the region's academically distinguished students by awarding an automatic $1,000 merit-based scholarship when they enroll.

G. Michael Pratt, Miami associate provost and dean of the regional campuses, announced the new scholarship May 15.

Pratt said this merit scholarship will begin with new incoming first-year students entering any of Miami's regional campuses in fall 2012. To qualify, students must have an ACT score of 22 or above and a high school GPA of 3.5 or above, and apply for admission by July 1, 2012. As long as they have received no other scholarship of equal or greater value from Miami University, they will automatically be granted this one-time scholarship when they enroll, he said. The scholarships are being funded by private donations.

“As we develop a new academic division on the regional campuses - and we continue to develop new and exciting four-year degree programs - we feel it’s the perfect time to reach out to the best and brightest students in our region,” Pratt said. "We hope this scholarship will remind high-achieving graduating seniors that Miami's regional campuses are a viable, cost-efficient and high-quality option for them.”

Pratt said recipients of this merit award will be invited to enroll in Honors 181: Introduction to Engaged Learning. This course is the first step in entering the innovative Miami University Honors Program.

Pratt said the regional campuses are moving up the deadline for fall semester applications as well - Aug. 1 is the new deadline – in an effort to minimize the bottleneck of late registrations leading up to the first day of classes. Hence, all admission application materials must be received by Aug. 1 to enroll for fall 2012 classes.

Miami University's regional locations include Miami University Hamilton, Miami University Middletown, Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester and Greentree Health Science Academy in Middletown.
