Miami University trustees today (April 27) approved an increase in tuition and fees of 3.5 percent for in-state students and 3 percent for out-of-state students for the 2012-2013 academic year. This brings in-state tuition and fees for students in Oxford to $13,067 and out-of-state tuition to $28,631*.
Similar increases – 3.5 percent for in-state students and 3 percent for out-of-state students – were approved for undergraduates at the Hamilton and Middletown campuses. First-year Ohio students will pay $4,922 at the regional campuses this fall. Upperclass regional students will pay $7,481. A 3.5 percent increase for graduate students at all campuses was also approved.
Miami’s regional campuses become a new division in the 2013-2014 academic year with the approval of a resolution by trustees. The proposal for the new division followed recommendations from two university committees and reflects goals put forth by the Ohio Board of Regents, which wants more four-year degree programs to meet local workforce needs and changing economic conditions in Southwest Ohio. The new division will offer flexibility and autonomy to the regionals to develop those programs.
The division, to be named later by an implementation committee, will be granted all the authority, rights and responsibilities consistent with other academic divisions, including the authority to recommend the hiring of faculty, and developing new degrees and programs in response to the needs of the region. Regional campuses faculty may be appointed in the new division’s programs and departments or through discipline-based academic departments in other divisions or both.
Steven DeLue, professor of political science and chair of the executive committee of University Senate at Miami, publicly commended President David Hodge and Provost Bobby Gempesaw for the provision that enables new faculty appointments to be made in the new division or in existing departments and divisions and said it embraces consensus among administration and University Senate.
Brad Bundy, interim vice president for university advancement, reported the single highest annual fund year on record for Miami. The university’s current campaign, For Love and Honor, has reached $436 million toward its goal of $500 million.
Trustees also approved these items:
- a new undergraduate degree program, the bachelor of arts in interactive media studies, in the School of Fine Arts, beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year.
- members of the faculty holding the title of lecturer or clinical faculty shall be deemed to be members of Faculty Assembly for the purpose of qualifying them to serve on University Senate and its committees
- a title change from the School of Fine Arts to the School of Creative Arts effective July 1, 2012
- awarding of contracts for design and building of three residence halls on Western campus, to be paid with bond funds with a total project budget not to exceed $64,250,000
- annexation of Miami property into the City of Oxford for the Butler County engineer to replace the Bonham Road Bridge with a new bridge
- amendments to the Enabling Act of the University Senate and faculty assembly.
- naming of a new national trustee, C. Michael Gooden, for a three-year term beginning July 1
- miscellaneous fees, the majority of which are unchanged.
* Oxford students also pay $480 in a combination of fees for technology, facilities and Metro bus transportation.
