RecycleMania is an annual intercollegiate recycling contest that has grown each year since it began in 2001 at Miami and Ohio Universities. First place winner in the Stephen K. Gaski Per Capita Classic competition — one of the three primary contest categories (named in memory of Stephen Gaski, director of building and special services at Miami who died in 2005) —was Union College, with 61.79 cumulative pounds per person. This year 605 schools participated in Recyclemania (including the Competition and Benchmark divisions): 92 million pounds of recyclables and organic materials were recovered, which prevented the release of nearly 150,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E), according to the RecycleMania organization. This reduction in greenhouse gases is equivalent to the annual emissions from more than 25,840 passenger cars or; electricity use of more than nearly 16,406 homes; or the burning of nearly 705 railcars’ worth of coal. Schools recycled more during the weeks of the contest: the average recycling rate for participating schools increased from 27.61 percent to 28.49 percent over the course of the eight-week tournament. Residence Hall Winner In Miami’s residence hall competition, which ran concurrently with the RecycleMania contest, Clawson Hall placed first with 12.79 cumulative pounds per student recycled. Residents of Clawson Hall received a prize of a free pass for a session at the climbing wall at the Recreational Sports Center. (See Sidebar for more results). Among Ohio Universities: Ohio University, 70th; Youngstown State, 96th; Wright State University, 186th; University of Cincinnati, 205th; and Ohio State University, 246th. The RecycleMania Tournament is an independent program of RecycleMania, Inc., a nonprofit organization led by recycling managers from participating schools. Program management is provided by Keep America Beautiful with additional program support from the US EPA’s WasteWise program and the College and University Recycling Coalition (CURC).
